- 1957 – The first man-made satellite was launched and later in the same year a satellite with a dog in it was sent into orbit
- 1961 – Yuri Gagarin became the first person in space
- 1963 – Valentine Tereshkova became the first woman in space
- 1968 – Apollo 8 made the first manned orbit of the moon
- 1969 – Neil Armstrong became the first man to walk on the moon
- 1972 – Three astronauts spent 44 hours on the moon. This was the last manned landing on the moon
- 1981 – The first Space Shuttle, Columbia, was launched
- 1983 – Sally Ride became the first U.S. woman in space
- 1986 – The Space Shuttle Challenger, exploded 73 seconds after take off, killing the entire crew of seven
- 1990 – The Hubble Space Telescope was launched
- 1998 – Two Soviet cosmonauts remained in space for a record 365 days
